Why the Iron Boots in the Legend of Zelda Series Make No Sense

This always used to bug me in Ocarina of Time. WHERE DO THE BOOTS GO WHEN HE TAKES THEM OFF AND WHY DO THEY STOP BEING HEAVY? Of course, Link doesn't actually sport a backpack in any of the Legend of Zelda video game titles, which raises other questions.
